Catherine Auger of Vanilla Tree Photography, featured artist for the August Art Walk
Hello there! I’m Catherine and I love photography! I’ve always been a picture taker, even as a child, but I never thought I’d make it my profession. In fact, I have a degree in Economics. About 5 years ago I was inspired both by the desire to take better photos of my children, and the desire to learn something new, to pick up a DSLR camera and really learn how to use it. I took a short online class about photographing people and suddenly friends were asking me to take photos for them. So I turned it into a little business. I never thought it would go where it has! I have been published in 3 magazines, on several blogs, and had a photo accepted on Vogue Italia’s website. Last year I even won the Sweepstakes at the Eastern Idaho State Fair! I feel very honored and really appreciate when others find my work inspiring.
I love being able to create the things I see in my imagination. I am constantly learning new techniques and technical skills. I do have a difficult time being creative as I am more of a ‘left brained’ person. But I love the challenge!
I am mostly inspired by nature and emotion. I especially love the emotion that’s conveyed in a person’s eyes. I seem to always be drawn to the eyes when I take photos. I feel like the eyes can tell an entire story and it captivates me. I also like things that are a little dark and a tiny bit creepy sometimes. It makes for an interesting perspective and forces me to shoot photos in ways I wouldn’t normally.
As far as technical stuff goes, I love shooting with my Pentax K-5 IIs!! Pentax is built well, weather resistant, and the quality is excellent. My favorite lenses are 40mm, 50mm, and 70mm. I also love Photoshop! It helps me achieve my vision, especially on my more creative work. My creative shots I tend to go a little more crazy on the editing. I typically edit my regular portrait sessions more simply for the most part. But I always try to keep my style, which is rich colors and a little dramatic.
My favorite subjects to take photos of are newborns, high school seniors, brides, horses, and models for creative and fashion work. I also take babies & kids, teens, couples, beauty, and headshots. And I have a big place in my heart for those with special needs! My son has autism and is usually a challenge to photograph, so I know how hard it can be to get good shots. But I also know how wonderful it is when you do get a great shot! I have done sessions with a few other special needs children and am always willing to do them!
